High School Seniors Are Using Lots of LSD This Year

Jacob Sullum pokes numerous holes in the drug czar’s recent claims of dramatic drug war progress. This in particular jumped out at me:

…if Walters wants to take credit for every drop in drug use that occurs on his watch, he'll have to take the blame for the enormous increases in past-month LSD use among high school seniors and  past-month methamphetamine use among sophomores, both of which nearly doubled between 2007 and 2008 (hitting a whopping 1.1 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively).

Be careful out there, kids! Thanks to the total failure of the war on drugs, you are up to your asses in acid and meth, but seriously, do not mix them. It will suck. You’ll get arrested (and probably tasered, too).

See, contrary to the drug czar’s wild accusations, those of us who want to end the drug war have no interest in seeing young people make poor choices. And the fact that America’s high schools are overflowing with acid and speed ought to help illustrate why closing the black market is actually a perfectly rational approach to keeping powerful drugs away from our kids.

...?

who ever wrote this is a complete idiot....i would agree meth and acid shouldnt be used by most people especially kids but get over yourself, i bet you dropped more lsd by the time you where a senior than these kids will there entire lifes, meth is a diff story ill agree that shits dumb...but none the less your a fucking dumbass

????

Real intelligent comment! If drugs were regulated and controlled by people, that were not criminals, then just maybe the damn kids would not be buying them at school. So much for the 1000 foot rule on dealing drugs close schools. It is working great! We can't keep drugs out of prisons, either. When are illegal drugs going to be 100% eliminated? 2012 like Malaysia? It really looks like the drug war is working well! We are giving the kids to the drug dealers on a silver platter! But, I guess I just sound like a dumb ass, too.

If people really cared about he kids, then there would be an intelligent discussion started instead of some guy calling everybody dumbasses. Alcohol prohibition did not work and neither will drug prohibition, in its present form. But, the drug war did get rid of 5000+ Mexicans this year. Won't have to worry about them immigrating, legally or illegally! That might make others happy, but the carnage enrages me! Now its Mexincan gangsters and not Al Capone! They don't deserve the deaths from this country's illegal drug use!

Or....

Maybe he does care about the kids' lsd use. Is that so unlikely? We don't know what he really feels. Even if he did drop a lot of acid (which we also don't know), why would that mean he doesn't care? I dropped a lot of acid and I care. I know how powerful it can be and how dangerous it can be. And I gotta tell you, I honestly think legalization could drastically improve people's experiences with acid. It's never gonna be safe. To do acid is a real adventure, and you don't go on an adventure without accepting that you might get hurt. But still, acid is such a psychological drug (the right or wrong set and setting can determine the difference between getting panic attacks that persist or having the most enlightening experience of your life), that anything that makes people more likely to have a good trip is the absolute best policy to have regarding the drug. Hiding from police is the extreme opposite of what you want to be doing when you're on acid. What i think the best regulation would be is to allow a legal lsd culture to form, where anywhere you buy acid you buy it from very experienced people who can guide you, impart onto you a deep respect for the drug, and help you decide sincerely if acid is really something you should be trying at all (it's definitely not for everyone, and these guys would make sure to explain that to the buyer). And also, if it's legal, it is simply going to be much more difficult for kids to obtain it (which is what the author was saying). Another HUGELY important thing the legalization of acid would do is that it would allow people to know the exact doses they're taking. Acid is a drug that you take micrograms of, so anything you take might have a tiny amount that will hardly affect you or might have a very large amount of acid. You never really have an idea how much you're actually taking. With such a powerful drug, knowing the dose makes all the difference in the world, and people will never know their dose until the drug is sold legally.

Plus,

since it is such a psychological drug, it does significant harm for the government to try to convince people they have brain damage when they probably don't; not to mention trying to get the rest of society to look down on you ("above the influence").

America Needs To Get Angry

This article is a perfect example not only of the dangerous backlash from the drug war but also how drug czar rhetoric can have the ability to convince people that the war on drugs must continue. John Q. has a hard time understanding that the increase in cooked up bad drugs like meth (and even worse, mixing it with acid, goodgod!) points to the desperate need for REGULATION rather than prohibition.

Believe me when I say, lots of mainstream America just does not understand how legalizing drugs will help prevent stats such as those cited in Scott's article.

I commented on an earlier blog saying "ok,maybe we need to be more patient and give Obama a chance etc" but I was wrong. Damn wrong.

Educating mainstream America remains paramount in my opinion but we need to do something about this drug war yesterday. This isn't a war on drugs,it's a war on the youth of America. Parents everywhere need to get angry, and the only way they'll do that is to understand how this drug war really works.

everyone at my school is

everyone at my school is doing acid haha

All I know is that when acid use goes up.....

The music gets better.

good points

lets make a commercial
