Volunteers Needed: Phone Campaign in DC, Writers from Anywhere

Submitted by David Borden on (Issue #558)

StoptheDrugWar.org (DRCNet) is seeking enthusiastic volunteers for two important purposes:

Membership Drive: Do you live in Washington, DC or nearby? We need help from friendly drug reform enthusiasts who are willing to spend a couple of hours on one or more evenings working the phones for DRCNet's membership fundraising drive. This effort will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, starting this coming week. (No session on election day.) Volunteers will be calling previous DRCNet contributors. Come on out, enjoy free pizza and other snacks, make new friends, and help raise needed funds for the cause while gaining valuable phone-banking experience. E-mail [email protected] or call us at (202) 293-8340 ext. 301 for further information or to sign up.

Writers: In the second half of November or early December, StoptheDrugWar.org will be carrying out an ambitious week-long writing-based campaign dealing with the mainstream media's coverage of drug issues, and we are seeking a team of good volunteer writers to be part of it. Along with writing skills, volunteers for this project should have a fairly good understanding of the effects of drug prohibition -- visit our Site Map page and scroll down to the "Consequences of Prohibition" section to get an idea of what we mean by that. Contact David Borden at [email protected] or (202) 293-8340 ext. 301 for further information about this very exciting effort.

Drug prohibition and all it's disastrous consequences can be visibly seen the in unbelievable amount of violence located in my country of birth. I was born in beautiful Chihuahua, Chihuahua Mexico. A place where authorities find decapitated heads posted on pikes with messages that read 'HA HA HA'. A place where the hit man leave no witnesses and display no mercy against anyone. A place where shoot outs with military and police, who often work for the drug cartels, occur in broad daylight.
The most graphic horror movie made in Hollywood can't compare to the atrocities happening next door to uncle Sam. Many Americans are unaware of what's happening and the truth of the matter is what's happening in Mexico will spill over the border. Border cities will be the first to be affected, followed by cities and states heavily controlled by gangs or any other criminal organizations. So far in Mexico this year, 4,000 people have been killed or roughly 13 per day. Al capon in his most sadistic days can't compare to the cartels and their campaign of terror against themselves, the government and the people.
Ending drug prohibition will destroy the power of the wicked and greedy. The tougher the government is on drugs, the more of an opportunity their is for individuals and organization to profit large amounts of dirty money. Dirty money feeds corruption and thus makes it more difficult to end prohibition. The mere fact that drug prohibition has been going on for almost 40 years as compared to alcohol prohibition which lasted only 14 years, shows the amount of influence that drug money has on politicians and lawmakers.
